The city of Lake of the Woods was named by pioneer Mrs. Florence Cuddy. It was established in 1925. One historic document cites a variant name for the community: Lake Mountain Woods. The town is contained in CuddyCanyon along the Ventura and KernCounty line inside LosPadresNational Forest. The population was 833 at the 2000 census.
